What is a Mommy Makeover?

48URC0M7Y2-2

As plastic surgery becomes more popular and less taboo, there are many procedure and treatment terms that can be confusing to people researching plastic surgery options. In some instances, procedures can even have multiple meanings, which only adds confusion to patients wanting to educate themselves on their plastic surgery options. One procedure in particular that can be confusing to define is the mommy makeover. Dr. Greenwald’s goal with his mommy makeover patients is to help restore their pre-baby body and in many cases improve their self-confidence. The procedure can address one or multiple areas of the body and is typically performed when a mother has completed, or plans to take a long break from, having children. The term “mommy makeover” will have a different meaning based on the specific concerns of the individual patient. For example, some women require a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) and a breast lift after experiencing loose skin in the abdominal area and sagging breasts from breastfeeding. For other women, a mommy makeover could consist of a breast augmentation to add volume to deflated breasts or liposuction to contour that certain area of the body that is diet and exercise resistant. There are even some women who include Botox, injectable fillers and skin care procedures into their mommy makeover treatment plan so they look refreshed after countless sleepless nights. At our practice, we are proud to offer non-surgical options such as CoolSculpting – a one hour in-office body contouring treatment – which is perfect for busy moms who can’t be slowed by recovery times. “Every woman’s body responds differently to child bearing, which is why we customize our treatment plans for each individual patient” says Dr. Greenwald.

One of the most popular questions our mommy makeover patients ask is how soon after delivering can the procedure(s) be performed? “ For surgical procedures, I ask my patients to wait about 6 months after giving birth to schedule their consultation, to allow their body time to recover and see how their shape changes.” says Dr. Greenwald. However, for non-surgical treatments such as Botox, injectable fillers and CoolSculpting, patients may have less restrictions than surgical candidates.

What if your family is not yet complete? Can you decide to have children even after your mommy makeover? “While patients have the ability to bear children post-surgery, they should understand future childbirth may affect the integrity of their result” says Dr. Greenwald. “This is why I typically recommend my patients wait until they have completed their family.”
