Tips for Accompanying a Woman to Her Breast Augmentation Consult

Dr. Joshua Greenwald normally blogs to individuals that are interested in plastic surgery for themselves. However, he wanted to create a blog specifically for those that accompany potential candidates to their breast augmentation consultations. Although the surgical consultation focuses on the needs and wants of the patient, her companion plays an important role in this appointment (and the entire surgical experience).

Here, Dr. Greenwald shares some thoughts for those that are planning to accompany a loved one to her breast augmentation consultation.

Ignore Your Personal Bias

If you are the boyfriend or husband of a breast augmentation patient, you likely love the way she looks as is! But your wife or girlfriend is not getting implants to please you — this is about her happiness and self-confidence. Try to avoid saying, “I love your breasts exactly the way they are!” or other things that could reveal your bias and make the appointment uncomfortable or unproductive.

Speak Up (In a Supportive Way)

Don’t take the previous advice as a suggestion that you should stay silent throughout the entire appointment. Your vocal support is needed, especially as your partner tries on different sizers to determine her implant size. Gently and tactfully share your opinion if you think one size looks better than another does. Remind her of her lifestyle (is she into CrossFit? a busy mom? in the public eye?) and personality (does she love receiving attention? would she rather go unnoticed in a crowd?). Lifestyle and personality are important when picking out implants.

Ask the Questions She Forgets

Your wife or girlfriend is probably going to feel so excited (or nervous) during her consultation that she may forget to ask questions or voice concerns that she has mentioned to you at home. One of the most helpful things you can do is keep a running list on your phone or notepad of questions to ask during the breast consultation. That way, if she blanks during the conversation, you can quickly step in. Also, feel free to ask Dr. Greenwald or our staff any of your own questions about the procedure, recovery or results.

If you are playing “wingman” to your significant other in her upcoming breast augmentation consultation, rest assured that our team will do everything we can to make the appointment pleasant and productive.
