Facelift surgery isn’t just for women. The procedure is increasingly common in men seeking youthful confidence and a competitive edge.

At Dr. Joshua Greenwald’s practice in Harrison and Manhattan, NY, we specialize in facelifts for men. As a board-certified, fellowship-trained plastic surgeon, Dr. Greenwald understands men’s specific needs and goals when it comes to facelifts.

He empathetically listens to your feelings, discusses your surgical goals, and helps you plan a facelift that’s right for you.

In today’s blog, we cover three reasons men are seeking facelifts.

Why Men Are Embracing Facelift Surgery

Facelifts for men are becoming more common as societal attitudes about plastic surgery evolve. These are three of the main reasons that men choose this transformative procedure.

Improving Self-Perception

Many people assume that only women feel distressed about the signs of facial aging, but that’s a major myth. Men can feel just as sad, frustrated, and demoralized as women when they notice sagging skin, deep smile lines, and drooping jowls.

Disliking your reflection can have a profoundly negative effect on your self-perception. A facelift can help you like what you see in the mirror, which many men find has a positive emotional and psychological impact.

Boosting Confidence

Disliking your looks can also affect how you relate to others. Your confidence can suffer severely.

You might feel too underconfident to ask people on a date or even approach them. Or you might hate work meetings because your appearance makes you want to hide.

Poor confidence may make you hold back in every area of your life.

A facelift can help you claim the outward appearance that lets your inner confidence shine.

Staying Competitive

In many industries today, being energetic and refreshed can provide an edge, especially in industries that value a youthful image.

A facelift can help you maintain that youthful look, removing a barrier to success. Combining your experience with a youthful look can give you an edge.

The Specific Benefits of Facelifts for Men

The benefits we’ve discussed above are big picture, but it’s important to understand the specific ways a facelift can improve your appearance. With this surgery, Dr. Greenwald tightens underlying muscles, removes extra skin, and repositions fat in the lower part of the face (often the first place to show signs of aging in men).

A facelift can:

Restore Jawline Definition

Reduce Wrinkles

Improve Skin Sagging

Improve Facial Symmetry

Facelifts for men prioritize a natural, masculine appearance, preserving your strong features while reducing the signs of aging.

In your pursuit to reverse the aging process, you may consider both surgical and non-surgical procedures. Dr. Joshua Greenwald, a board-certified plastic surgeon with offices in Harrison, Carmel and Manhattan, New York, enjoys guiding his patients through the process of deciding on treatments that feel right for them. If you can’t decide whether to choose traditional facelift or liquid facelift for your premature signs of aging, he offers this blog to help you make an informed decision.

Facelift

Facelift is a comprehensive procedure that addresses signs of aging on the neck and lower portion of the face. Dr. Greenwald customizes each surgery to meet the goals of the patient. Changes that he can achieve include minimizing lines and wrinkles, reducing jowls by removing deposits of fat along the jawline and tightening loose skin and visible neck bands for a smoother neck. When combined, these techniques create a younger appearance that avoids looking “pulled” or unnatural.

Liquid Facelift

Liquid facelift is a non-invasive treatment that achieves many of the same benefits as surgical facelift, except with injectables rather than a scalpel. Dr. Greenwald strategically places injections of dermal filler and/or neurotoxins into the face to diminish wrinkles, restore volume to the cheeks, smooth out the contours of the neck and restore definition along the jawline. Through years of practice, he understands the precise amount and type of injectable (Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse or Restylane) that will best produce your desired results.

Weighing Your Options

The most obvious difference between facelift and liquid facelift is how long the results last. Understandably, surgery produces results that are more dramatic and remain visible for approximately one decade. On the other hand, transformations with injectables are usually subtler, with a duration of a few months to about one year. To maintain the results from liquid facelift, you need to periodically return for additional injections.

Another notable factor is the recovery. After surgical facelift, you need to devote a couple weeks to rest and relaxation, taking 10 to 14 days off from work while you heal. You can expect some discomfort, swelling and bruising during that period. In contrast, liquid facelift has no recovery period. As soon as your appointment is complete, you may walk out of Dr. Greenwald’s office and resume your normal work and social schedule.

Schedule a Consultation

After listening to your concerns and goals during a consultation, Dr. Greenwald can assist you in developing a treatment plan for facial rejuvenation that has you feeling both comfortable and satisfied. Whether you ultimately decide to take a surgical or non-surgical route, he can provide high-quality results with attentive care.

To meet with Dr. Greenwald in-person or virtually, please schedule a consultation at your soonest convenience.

The pursuit of the fountain of youth is nothing new. For decades, men and women have sought out plastic surgery procedures such as facelift to turn back the clock on facial aging. But what has changed is the way plastic surgeons approach facelift. As their understanding of facial anatomy has increased and their techniques have become more polished, they are able to provide patients with exceptional results.

Read on as Dr. Joshua Greenwald shares how facelift techniques have improved over time.

Addresses the Deeper Facial Structures

Previous generations of facelift patients often sported an unnaturally pulled look, and a frozen, stiff or even “windblown” expression. Surgeons used to simply remove excess skin and pull the remaining skin taut while making no effort to improve the underlying physiology of the face. This outdated approach is now known as a “skin-only” facelift.

The skin-only facelift has been retired in favor of a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation. Extending the scope of surgery to address the deeper layers of facial structures allows for more natural results.

During facelift, Dr. Greenwald lifts and tightens the aging facial skin as well as the underlying infrastructure, a network of fat deposits, connective tissue and musculature that lies over the facial bones and is known as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). Repositioning sagging tissue, muscle and displaced fat while tightening the skin prevents a pulled look and helps the patient look years younger.

Complementary Procedures

Another way that facelift has evolved over time is that surgeons now incorporate other complementary techniques to accentuate the results of surgery. For instance, Dr. Greenwald often uses facial implants, dermal fillers or fat transfer to volumize and define areas of the face that become hollow with age. A few well-placed filler injections can define the jawline or increase the volume of the cheeks or temples.

Modern facelift is also commonly performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery and/or brow lift for “full face rejuvenation.”

Expanded Options for Anesthesia

Traditionally facelift was performed in a hospital setting with general anesthesia. Patients had a longer and tougher road to recovery and some even required professional post-operative care.

Nowadays, lighter forms of anesthesia, like local anesthesia with sedation, are becoming more popular. Local anesthesia is safe and the recovery from procedures performed with local anesthesia is typically shorter and more comfortable. Facelift patients are usually allowed to go home within a few hours of surgery and they generally have less post-operative discomfort.

Discuss Your Facelift Options With Dr. Greenwald

Dr. Greenwald is committed to outstanding facial rejuvenation and will work with you to customize a treatment plan to your individual needs. To request a consultation with him, please call or email our practice today.

Facelift surgery is a remarkable procedure that gently turns back the hands of time, firming and smoothing aged skin while creating more youthful facial contours. But how do you know if you are ready to undergo this transformative procedure? Dr. Joshua Greenwald has you covered. Here, the renowned NYC facelift expert reveals three signs that you could benefit from surgery.

1. You are bothered by deep wrinkles and sagging in your lower face and neck.

Facelift is intended to target noticeable signs of aging in the lower face and neck, including deep wrinkles, sagging skin and loss of definition. Facelift with Dr. Greenwald usually involves minimizing the appearance of deep creases around the mouth and eliminating jowls and drooping skin under the chin and along the neckline. By lifting and tightening the skin and tissues, Dr. Greenwald can create a sharper jawline and add more definition under the chin and on the neck.

2. You have lost facial fullness and volume with age.

Facelift is not just about removing loose skin. The procedure can also rebuild what has been lost — specifically, it can restore volume to areas like the cheeks that become sunken or hollow-looking over time. In the most severe cases of volume loss, flattened cheeks can actually pull down the corners of the mouth into a perpetual scowl.

During facelift surgery, Dr. Greenwald repositions displaced fat pads of the midface and lifts the facial muscles that slip and stretch with age. These surgical modifications recreate plump, healthy looking cheeks and restore a pleasant, approachable facial expression.

3. You want lasting improvement.

The third sign that hints facelift may be right for you is that you want lasting facial rejuvenation results without upkeep. Perhaps you like the anti-aging effects that can be achieved with Botox, fillers or laser procedures, but find the maintenance and touch-up appointments inconvenient.

By surgically lifting and tightening the facial skin, tissues and muscles, facelift with Dr. Greenwald provides lasting correction in a single procedure — no maintenance needed! Once you have devoted the time to undergo surgery and recuperate from it, you can enjoy your facelift results for many years to come. Facelift will not stop the aging process, but you will always look younger than if you did not undergo surgery.

Nasolabial folds are lines found on both sides of the mouth that become more noticeable when a person laughs or smiles.

They are normal, and everyone has them. However, they can become more pronounced with age as the skin becomes thinner and starts to sag.

Fortunately, if you’re unhappy with the way your nasolabial folds look, there are a number of treatment options available.

Below, Dr. Joshua Greenwald shares what you can do to treat your nasolabial folds and create a more youthful appearance.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular, non-surgical means of plumping the skin to make nasolabial folds less noticeable.

A skilled provider injects the soft tissue fillers just beneath the skin’s surface, causing the skin to appear fuller and younger-looking.

Fillers eventually get absorbed by the body so they last only temporarily (four months to a year), but they are easy, quick, and safe to get. Popular filler options include Juvederm, Perlane, Bellafill, and Sculptra.

Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing treatments are a way to offset nasolabial folds by improving the tone and texture of the skin surrounding the folds.

Skin resurfacing options include microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing. Microdermabrasion rejuvenates the skin through deep exfoliation while laser skin resurfacing uses pulsating, concentrated light beams to remove skin that’s damaged.

Surgical Treatments

Patients with very deep or prominent nasolabial folds may require surgical correction with facelift. The procedure lifts and tightens the tissues in the lower face and neck, and tightens loose, sagging skin. Although the procedure isn’t intended specifically for nasolabial folds, tightening loose skin can help make them less noticeable.

Having a facelift just to correct nasolabial folds isn’t recommended as the procedure involves significant downtime and some risk. Patients who are concerned about nasolabial folds coupled with loose, sagging skin and tissues in the lower face and neck (including jowls) could benefit from facelift and should discuss this option with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

After devoting the time and energy to having facelift surgery, it is understandable that you want to enjoy your results for as long as possible. Although there are some factors that are largely out of your control, like the aging process or the effects of gravity, there are steps that you can take to age more gracefully after a facelift. Read on as Dr. Joshua Greenwald shares his best advice.

Pick Your Surgeon Carefully

The quality of your results will depend on the skill and experience of the surgeon you select, and the approach he or she takes. A qualified facelift surgeon is well versed in techniques that create natural, long-lasting results, and will be able to recommend the right approach for your needs.

You will most likely achieve better-looking and longer-lasting benefits from a traditional facelift procedure — which addresses the underlying structures of your face, including the fat and muscle — than you would with a “skin-only” lift that simply tightens the skin. Traditional facelift requires the knowledge and expertise of a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Quit Smoking

One of the best things you can do to prolong the anti-aging effects of facelift is not smoke or use tobacco products. Smoking accelerates the aging of the skin, leading to wrinkles and other visible signs of aging.

Protect Yourself from UV Exposure

UV rays are also harmful to the health and vitality of the skin. Spending too much time in the sun or on a tanning bed can lead to wrinkling, sagging skin and fine lines that detract from the results of a facelift. After surgery, it is best to wear sunscreen when going outdoors, avoid the sun between peak hours and refrain from deliberate tanning (both outside and on tanning beds).

Consider Maintenance Procedures

Certain anti-aging procedures can help keep the face looking youthful in the years following facelift without requiring additional surgery. For example, Botox injections can soften lines around the eyes and forehead, and fillers or fat transfer can add volume to areas where it has been lost. Laser skin resurfacing or chemical peels will gently remove the top layer of sun-damaged or hyperpigmented skin while triggering the production of collagen for softer, smoother skin.

Dr. Greenwald can suggest the procedure or combination of procedures that he feels will offer the best benefits.

It is not uncommon for some patients to seek one plastic surgery procedure, only to find out that they may actually be in need of another. New York cosmetic surgeon Dr. Joshua Greenwald does his utmost to educate his patients on what their procedure of choice can and cannot do. In this blog post, he shares the truth on commonly misunderstood plastic surgery procedures.

Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift

Many women who want bigger, fuller breasts are also bothered by sag (ptosis). But what many don’t know is that breast augmentation can actually worsen breast sag. Breast lift is the only surgical procedure available to improve the position of the breasts on the chest wall. If you want fuller and perkier breasts, Dr. Greenwald can combine breast augmentation with lift to achieve your desired results.

Liposuction and Tummy Tuck

Liposuction is a great solution for unwanted fatty deposits on the body. But what it cannot treat is loose, excess skin left over from substantial weight loss, like after pregnancy. Tummy tuck eliminates loose, hanging skin on the abdomen and tightens the remaining skin and underlying muscle tissues to create a smoother physique. Tummy tuck and liposuction are often performed together to produce a slimmer and tighter abdomen.

Facelift

Facelift is a popular choice for facial rejuvenation because it comprehensively treats a multitude of aging signs on the face. However, it does not treat the entire face. Facelift is ideal for patients whose cosmetic concerns relate to the middle and lower facial areas. If you have excess skin and fat on the neck and under the chin, neck lift may be more appropriate. For loose, excess skin on the upper eyelids, or puffy bags under the lower eyelids, eyelid surgery may be appropriate. For a furrowed brow or creases on the forehead, Dr. Greenwald may recommend brow lift. Depending on your aesthetic concerns and goals, the doctor may suggest combining several facial rejuvenation procedures.

In addition, facelift does not treat age spots, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation or dry, dull skin. Skin care procedures like chemical peels and laser skin rejuvenation can complement facelift by addressing these skin concerns.

To find out if you are a candidate for a specific procedure, schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Greenwald. Please call or email our New York City practice today to book an appointment.

There’s a common misconception that plastic surgery is performed exclusively for women. If the waiting room in Dr. Joshua Greenwald’s office is any indication of the typical plastic surgeon’s demographic, this information is highly inaccurate.

Virtually every day, Dr. Greenwald meets men that want cosmetic treatment to look as good as they feel. In this post, the plastic surgeon sheds light on the most common aesthetic concerns among his male patients.

Premature Signs of Facial Aging

One of the most common complaints among Dr. Greenwald’s male clientele is visible and premature signs of aging on the face. These men want to minimize prominent wrinkles, fine lines, skin laxity, jowls and displaced fat to shave years off of their appearance.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

Treatment depends on the specific concern and its severity. Some men achieve satisfactory wrinkle reduction with a series of Botox or filler injections. Others enjoy firmer and tighter skin with non-surgical treatments like Fraxel laser skin resurfacing. The gold standard of facial rejuvenation is facelift, which comprehensively addresses signs of aging in the middle and lower face. Modern facelift techniques yield very natural looking results without the telltale signs of surgery that concern many men.

Gynecomastia

Another embarrassing concern of some men is a condition known as gynecomastia, which causes the breasts to swell and enlarge. Having feminine-looking breasts can cause feelings of shame, stress and even depression, as some men withdraw from social situations due to their appearance.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

True gynecomastia requires surgical correction with male breast reduction. Dr. Greenwald excises excess glandular tissue and skin, removes fat deposits and re-drapes the remaining skin more tightly over the breasts. However, if the breasts are enlarged with purely excess fat, liposuction alone may provide sufficient results.

Diet and Exercise-Resistant Body Fat

The breasts aren’t the only area of the body that can accumulate excess fat. Many men struggle with diet and exercise-resistant body fat that accumulates on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, neck or chin. These pockets of fat can disrupt the proportion and balance of the body and attract unwanted attention.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

Liposuction is the best way to eliminate targeted areas of unwanted fat. Alternatively, individuals that desire a non-surgical solution may be interested in CoolSculpting, which uses controlled cooling to destroy unwanted fat.

If you or the man in your life is bothered by an aesthetic concern of the face, body or chest, Dr. Greenwald would like to help. Please call (914) 421-0113 or email our office to schedule an informational consultation with our trusted plastic surgeon.

Are you looking forward to showing off a slim, sexy physique on a weekend in the Hamptons or a vacation down to Florida? If diet and exercise have failed to give you the figure you desire, body sculpting with New York plastic surgeon Joshua Greenwald can help. The key is to plan your surgery far enough in advance so you are ready in time for the beach or pool. Here’s why Dr. Greenwald encourages you to act today in order to enjoy a beautiful bikini body come summer.

Leaves Plenty of Time to Heal

It is critical to allow your body sufficient time to heal from surgeries such as liposuction, tummy tuck or body lift. Depending on the specific procedure and its scope, it can take several months to completely recover from your surgery. During the first few months after your operation, swelling and bruising can obscure your results. They need up to six months or so to stabilize.

Less Temptation to Get Outside

Though spring in New York is a beautiful season, it is easier to stay inside and heal during the early months of spring, as compared to the warmer seasons. You won’t be tempted to spend all day outside enjoying the city and wearing down your healing body during the rainy months. Another good time to undergo surgery is winter, since the cold temperatures make it comfortable to stay inside and recover as much as possible.

Easier to Cover Up Bandages and Support Garments

For the weeks following your surgery, the treated area will be bandaged and you may be outfitted in a special support garment (similar to Spanx shapewear). It is easier to conceal the bandages and support garments under long, loose sleeves and pants. No one will be able to tell what is underneath your layers. Covering up proves more difficult during the hot months (precisely the time when you want to show off your improved physique!).

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

If you do not have the time to commit to surgical body sculpting and recovery, Dr. Greenwald offers a few non-surgical alternatives. Treatments like SmartLipo and CoolSculpting are great ways to reduce body fat without extensive recovery downtime and the potential risks of surgery.

To learn more about all of your body sculpting options — surgical and non-surgical — please schedule a consultation with Dr. Greenwald. Call (914) 421-0113 or email our New York City plastic surgery practice today.

It is very common for women having breast augmentation to wonder how the procedure will affect the shape of their nipples (if at all). To satisfy inquiring minds, Dr. Joshua Greenwald has compiled a piece addressing these common questions.

But before diving into the “Q & As,” Dr. Greenwald wants to clarify the proper vernacular. What most women refer to as the nipple is actually the nipple-areola complex (NAC). The nipple is the anatomical feature projecting from the center of the nipple-areola complex that delivers milk to a nursing baby and becomes erect upon stimulation. The areola is the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.

Will breast augmentation enlarge the nipples?

If you look through Dr. Greenwald’s before and after photo gallery, you should notice that most women’s NACs do not get bigger after breast augmentation. They may look fuller, but they generally do not increase in diameter. They certainly do not expand in proportion to the implant.

Can breast surgery change the shape of the nipples?

If you dislike the shape or size of your NAC, Dr. Greenwald can correct these issues. The exact nipple/areola correction technique that he uses depends on the specific problem he is addressing. He can improve the look of oversized, protruding or wide nipples, and overly large or puffy areolas.

Will nipples lose sensitivity after breast augmentation?

There is a possibility that breast augmentation will cause partial or complete loss of sensation. However, the risk is very small.

Some women experience heightened nipple sensitivity after breast augmentation. This usually occurs due to the surgery stretching the nerves, and it is almost always temporary. Certain techniques such as wearing gel nipple covers or taking anti-inflammatory drugs can help reduce the discomfort, which usually subsides about three weeks after surgery.

What can be done about inverted nipples?

Inverted nipples can be corrected during breast augmentation. The exact technique depends on the degree of nipple inversion and how severe it is.
