Dr. Joshua Greenwald frequently consults with men who have gynecomastia, or enlarged, woman-like breasts. Some of these men want a more chiseled chest but hesitate at the thought of surgical treatment — either because of the time required to recover, concerns about scarring or other fears. Thus, the prospect of treating gynecomastia with non-surgical solutions is commonly broached.

Whether gynecomastia can be treated non-surgically depends on the circumstances of the case — namely the anatomy of the breasts. Read on to learn more.

Treating Gynecomastia Without Surgery

Non-surgical treatments are only recommended in cases where the enlarged breasts are caused by the accumulation of adipose (fat) tissue. These cases are classified as “pseudo-gynecomastia” and not true gynecomastia.

One option for mild cases of pseudo-gynecomastia is CoolSculpting, which uses cryolipolysis technology to freeze and destroy unwanted fat (the body then naturally eliminates the fat). CoolSculpting can help get rid of mild to moderate amounts of unwanted chest fat and create a more masculine look in the patient’s upper body.

Unfortunately, CoolSculpting will not work for every case of pseudo-gynecomastia or true gynecomastia. For men whose enlarged breasts are due to glandular tissue or a combination of glandular and fat tissue, surgical breast reduction is the more suitable solution.

What Does Male Breast Reduction Entail?

During male breast reduction, the glandular tissue on the chest is surgically excised through small incisions, and excess fat and skin are also removed. Oversized areolas can be reduced or repositioned higher on the chest if desired. The incisions for male breast reduction are strategically placed in the natural creases and transitions of the skin, including around the edge of the areola, for discreet-looking scars.

Male breast reduction is not the only surgical solution for gynecomastia. Men whose breasts are made up of solely fat but have a hard time getting rid of it through weight loss measures or non-surgical treatment, may opt for liposuction. During liposuction, a slender tube called a cannula breaks up and suctions unwanted fat from the breasts to create a flatter, firmer contour.

Recovering from male breast reduction and chest liposuction is usually quicker and more comfortable than patients expect. Many are back to work and their normal routine within a week or two, and back in the gym within four to six weeks.

Achieving great results from gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) depends on many factors, including the skill and experience of your surgeon. Another element that is important to the surgical outcomes is your recovery period.

NYC plastic surgeon Joshua Greenwald will ensure you have truthful, accurate information about the healing process, and provide detailed instructions. With the right information, you can increase the likelihood of a speedy recovery and optimal surgical result.

How Long Does It Take to Recover?

In general, how quickly you heal from gynecomastia surgery is based on:

The surgical approach taken by Dr. Greenwald (i.e., whether he performed liposuction and/or tissue excision)

Your age and health

Whether you comply with Dr. Greenwald’s post-operative instructions

For a safe and speedy recovery, it is imperative that you follow all of Dr. Greenwald’s post-operative instructions. This information is intended to reduce the risk of complications and help your body heal optimally.

Common Side Effects

Swelling, bruising and soreness are common side effects after gynecomastia surgery. You may feel tight or sore in your chest area if you spend time working at a computer or lift your arms.

It is also common to have less energy than normal as your body recuperates from the operation. You should take it easy and rest as much as possible. If you experience any discomfort, you can take prescription painkillers provided by Dr. Greenwald or over-the-counter medication like Tylenol.

Compression Garments

After surgery, an elastic bandage or support garment will be placed around your chest to minimize swelling and prevent any type of fluid accumulation. The slight compression from the bandage or garment also supports the healing breast tissues. You should wear the bandage or compression garment for about three to four weeks, until Dr. Greenwald permits you to remove it.

Resuming Your Daily Routine

You can bathe as soon as the day after surgery as long as you avoid getting the incisions wet. You can resume work or school about a week after surgery if you feel ready. If you work a physically demanding job, you might want to take additional time off to recuperate.

You can resume light exercise, such as short walks or slow rides on a stationary bike, approximately a week after surgery. You should refrain from lifting weights or performing chest exercises for about three to four weeks after surgery. At that point, you can gradually increase the intensity of the workouts.

Contact Dr. Joshua Greenwald

If you have any questions or concerns about the recovery process after gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Greenwald encourages you to reach out at any point. Please call or email our practice to speak with a member of our team.

Many factors can cause the enlargement of male mammary gland tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia or male breast enlargement. Frequent marijuana use, some medications and an imbalance of hormones are all potential culprits.

Fortunately, Dr. Joshua Greenwald, a New York City plastic surgery provider, can help. By performing male breast reduction in New York, Dr. Greenwald helps his male patients feel more confident and virile.

However, many of these patients wonder if their “man boobs” will grow back after the male breast reduction procedure. Generally, male breast reduction surgery affords patients with long-lasting results. Nonetheless, the following are factors that may cause the reoccurrence of man boobs after male breast reduction surgery.

Factors That May Cause Your Man Boobs to Reoccur

If the initial cause of male breast enlargement was frequent marijuana use and the patient has not halted or drastically lessened the habit following male breast reduction surgery, then man boobs may reoccur.

In addition, if the initial cause of gynecomastia was a medical problem such as an adrenal or pituitary tumor that has been left undiagnosed or untreated following male breast reduction surgery, then the patient’s man boobs may reoccur.

Another factor that may cause man boobs to reoccur is weight gain following male breast reduction surgery. Although removed fat cells will not grow back, significant weight gain may cause remaining fat cells to grow bigger. Significant weight gain may also cause new fat cells to form in treated and untreated areas.

Other factors, such as having a hormonal imbalance or taking certain medications, also may cause man boobs to reoccur. If you have additional questions or concerns regarding male breast reduction surgery, do not hesitate to call Dr. Greenwald at (914) 421-0113.

In addition to male breast reduction, the skilled breast reduction provider Dr. Greenwald also offers breast reconstruction and breast lift in New York.

There’s a common misconception that plastic surgery is performed exclusively for women. If the waiting room in Dr. Joshua Greenwald’s office is any indication of the typical plastic surgeon’s demographic, this information is highly inaccurate.

Virtually every day, Dr. Greenwald meets men that want cosmetic treatment to look as good as they feel. In this post, the plastic surgeon sheds light on the most common aesthetic concerns among his male patients.

Premature Signs of Facial Aging

One of the most common complaints among Dr. Greenwald’s male clientele is visible and premature signs of aging on the face. These men want to minimize prominent wrinkles, fine lines, skin laxity, jowls and displaced fat to shave years off of their appearance.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

Treatment depends on the specific concern and its severity. Some men achieve satisfactory wrinkle reduction with a series of Botox or filler injections. Others enjoy firmer and tighter skin with non-surgical treatments like Fraxel laser skin resurfacing. The gold standard of facial rejuvenation is facelift, which comprehensively addresses signs of aging in the middle and lower face. Modern facelift techniques yield very natural looking results without the telltale signs of surgery that concern many men.

Gynecomastia

Another embarrassing concern of some men is a condition known as gynecomastia, which causes the breasts to swell and enlarge. Having feminine-looking breasts can cause feelings of shame, stress and even depression, as some men withdraw from social situations due to their appearance.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

True gynecomastia requires surgical correction with male breast reduction. Dr. Greenwald excises excess glandular tissue and skin, removes fat deposits and re-drapes the remaining skin more tightly over the breasts. However, if the breasts are enlarged with purely excess fat, liposuction alone may provide sufficient results.

Diet and Exercise-Resistant Body Fat

The breasts aren’t the only area of the body that can accumulate excess fat. Many men struggle with diet and exercise-resistant body fat that accumulates on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, neck or chin. These pockets of fat can disrupt the proportion and balance of the body and attract unwanted attention.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

Liposuction is the best way to eliminate targeted areas of unwanted fat. Alternatively, individuals that desire a non-surgical solution may be interested in CoolSculpting, which uses controlled cooling to destroy unwanted fat.

If you or the man in your life is bothered by an aesthetic concern of the face, body or chest, Dr. Greenwald would like to help. Please call (914) 421-0113 or email our office to schedule an informational consultation with our trusted plastic surgeon.

Some people feel self-conscious of their facial side profile from a young age, whereas others are disappointed to watch the effects of aging obscure it over time. Regardless of the cause of your specific concerns, Dr. Joshua Greenwald offers a variety of procedures that can help you achieve a beautiful and youthful looking facial profile. Read on to learn more about how the plastic surgeon can rejuvenate specific areas of the face for a more desirable profile.

Chin and Jawline

A strong chin and sculpted jawline are critical to a balanced side profile. Aging can cause fat deposits and jowls to develop along the chin, obscuring the jawline and causing what looks like a double chin. Some chins are recessed from birth, simply due to genetics.

If the problem is too much volume, liposuction is an excellent way to reduce unwanted pockets of fat and sculpt the chin and jawline. On the other hand, if the chin lacks volume and projection, a chin implant might be a great option. A well-placed chin implant offsets a recessed chin and gives the face a more balanced side profile.

Other techniques to add definition to the lower face and enhance its profile include the injection of dermal fillers or the patient’s own fat. During a fat transfer procedure, Dr. Greenwald removes fat from one area of the body and transfers it to the chin or jawline to add volume and shape.

Cheeks

The aging process typically robs the cheeks of at least some youthful volume, causing the mid-face to look hollow or sunken-in. Cheek implants are an excellent way to correct the appearance of deficient cheeks and create a well-balanced facial profile. Implants are manufactured in many different sizes and shapes to create the desired contours.

Fat transfer and dermal fillers also add “padding” to the cheeks.

Temples and Brow

A drooping brow bone or creased forehead can draw attention away from an otherwise beautiful facial profile. The forehead and brow area are vulnerable to the effects of aging, as the brow can droop and the forehead may develop deep creases over time.

Browlift (also known as forehead lift) restores the brow to a more youthful position for an energetic and friendly facial profile. The procedure also gently tightens the forehead skin to minimize the appearance of creases and lines.

These days there is an abundance of information available for women wanting to properly prepare for breast augmentation surgery. Most of it focuses on what you can do to prep your body for the operation. This is only one side of the coin. Knowing what not to do is just as important!

Here, Joshua Greenwald, MD, leading New York City Board Certified plastic surgery specialist, shares what not to do the night before your breast augmentation surgery.

Spend Hours Scouring Internet Forums

The Internet is a wonderful medium through which to discuss and exchange ideas; however, there is no way to confirm the accuracy of a lot of the content. It’s all right to look for tips about things that are helpful during recovery, or recommendations for good bras to buy after surgery. But your surgeon should be the one answering more important questions.

Don’t go too far down the rabbit hole the night before surgery. You could get lost reading accounts from Internet strangers that share incorrect information or information that doesn’t apply to you. You could feel influenced to suddenly change decisions that were made carefully and thoughtfully.

Make Last-Minute Changes about Your Implant Size

The night before surgery is not a good time to rethink the surgical plan that has been set in place. By this time, you and Dr. Greenwald have agreed on the type and size of implants to use, the surgical incision pattern and the placement of the implants. Be confident in your decisions and avoid second-guessing yourself if preoperative jitters set in.

It’s normal to worry that you have chosen implants that are too big or too small. However, realize that this is last-minute overthinking at play. Dr. Greenwald has many years of experience in breast augmentation and is wonderful at helping his patients make successful decisions about their implants.

Neglect Your Body

Finally, it is critical to follow all of the advice that Dr. Greenwald and his team have given you about prepping for surgery. You already have a list of medications, vitamins and nutritional supplements that can interfere with the surgery or impede healing. Avoid taking anything on this list and ask your surgical team if you have questions.

Refrain from drinking alcohol or having a cigarette. Alcohol suppresses your immune system. Smoking greatly increases the risk of surgical complications and inhibits wound healing. Take a bath or do some deep breathing to relax your mind and body.

Eat a light, healthy meal and get to bed early. You have a big day ahead of you!

It is very common for women having breast augmentation to wonder how the procedure will affect the shape of their nipples (if at all). To satisfy inquiring minds, Dr. Joshua Greenwald has compiled a piece addressing these common questions.

But before diving into the “Q & As,” Dr. Greenwald wants to clarify the proper vernacular. What most women refer to as the nipple is actually the nipple-areola complex (NAC). The nipple is the anatomical feature projecting from the center of the nipple-areola complex that delivers milk to a nursing baby and becomes erect upon stimulation. The areola is the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.

Will breast augmentation enlarge the nipples?

If you look through Dr. Greenwald’s before and after photo gallery, you should notice that most women’s NACs do not get bigger after breast augmentation. They may look fuller, but they generally do not increase in diameter. They certainly do not expand in proportion to the implant.

Can breast surgery change the shape of the nipples?

If you dislike the shape or size of your NAC, Dr. Greenwald can correct these issues. The exact nipple/areola correction technique that he uses depends on the specific problem he is addressing. He can improve the look of oversized, protruding or wide nipples, and overly large or puffy areolas.

Will nipples lose sensitivity after breast augmentation?

There is a possibility that breast augmentation will cause partial or complete loss of sensation. However, the risk is very small.

Some women experience heightened nipple sensitivity after breast augmentation. This usually occurs due to the surgery stretching the nerves, and it is almost always temporary. Certain techniques such as wearing gel nipple covers or taking anti-inflammatory drugs can help reduce the discomfort, which usually subsides about three weeks after surgery.

What can be done about inverted nipples?

Inverted nipples can be corrected during breast augmentation. The exact technique depends on the degree of nipple inversion and how severe it is.

The benefits of plastic surgery are not reserved for only women. In fact, the rise of men visiting plastic surgery offices is a trend seen across the country as well as in Dr. Greenwald’s office. “Woman have always felt pressure to stay young and youthful looking, however, recently, I have seen a huge increase in male patients, who want to look younger, fit better in their clothes and to stay competitive in the workplace ” says Dr. Greenwald. The most common cosmetic surgery for the male population is liposuction, typically in the abdomen, hips (or love handles) as well as in the chin/neck area. Other highly requested surgical procedures include blepharoplasty (or eyelid lift), facelifts/necklifts and gynecomastia (male breast reduction).

Even more popular for men in the plastic surgery realm is actually not surgery at all. With the increase of affordable and efficacious non-surgical options, it’s never been easier to look great without going under the knife. Dr. Greenwald has recognized the growing demand for these procedures by his male patients and has invested in exciting technology to support the needs of men seeking treatment in his practice. From Botox and injectable fillers to address fine lines and rejuvenate the face to hair restoration procedures such as Neograft to reverse hair loss, men have more options than ever before. Dr. Greenwald states, “Like women, men also want to fight the signs of aging which typically starts with non-surgical options such as skin care, Botox and injectables before progressing to more aggressive surgical intervention.” This holds true for body contouring procedures as well. In Dr. Greenwald’s practice, he offers CoolSculpting, a non-surgical, non-invasive alternative to liposuction. “CoolSculpting has really revolutionized the non-surgical body contouring market for men and women but specifically for the busy male, who is concerned about recovery time”, Dr. Greenwald adds “CoolSculpting is a safe and effective treatment to address problem areas such as the abdomen and love handles. Patients can have their in-office treatment on their lunch break and return to work the same day.”

When “breast reduction surgery” is mentioned, most people associate the procedure with females who have excessively large and often uncomfortable breasts. However, it can also be helpful to males with gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts.

True gynecomastia involves enlarged breast tissue, and can be caused by hormonal fluctuations or certain medications and drugs, including steroids and marijuana. It is common for gynecomastia to appear during puberty, and it often persists into adulthood. In contrast, men with pseudo-gynecomastia have excess fat in the chest area that is typically the result of being overweight. Males can also suffer from a combination of enlarged breast tissue and excess fat in the chest area.

2013 ASPS Gynecomastia Study

Whatever is causing the enlarged male breasts, the condition can be severely disheartening. In fact, a study published in the April 2013 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons), showed that when adolescents suffering from gynecomastia were compared to their healthy peers who did not have the condition, the former group had substantially worse self-esteem, social functioning and overall mental health than the latter. Furthermore, the severity of the enlarged breasts did not affect the degree to which the boys were emotionally and mentally impacted — even the mildest degree of gynecomastia can harmfully affect a boy’s psychological wellbeing.

What to Do If Your Child Suffers From Gynecomastia

The study suggests that for adolescents suffering from gynecomastia, the condition could be more than simply a cosmetic concern to them. If your male child suffers from enlarged beasts, discuss the issue with him. If he is being bullied, or feels embarrassed or ashamed about the condition, male breast reduction surgery may be right for him.

To learn more about gynecomastia treatment, schedule a consultation with New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald. He is a compassionate board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive expertise in the cosmetic surgery treatment of gynecomastia. He can evaluate the patient’s anatomical needs and aesthetic concerns and suggest a proper course of treatment.

If the patient suffers from true gynecomastia, the NYC surgeon will recommend male breast reduction surgery to excise the excess breast tissue. If he suffers from pseudo-gynecomastia, Dr. Greenwald will suggest liposuction of the area. He can also combine the procedures, if needed.

To schedule a consultation with Dr. Greenwald, please contact his practice by calling (914) 421-0113.

You may be familiar with the concept of mommy makeover surgery, which is not a specific surgery but rather a combination of multiple surgical procedures designed to make over moms who have excess, lax skin and weakened muscles in the midsection, and smaller, flatter or droopier breasts, all due to child rearing. However, do you know what “daddy makeover” surgery is? If not, read on to find out.

What Is Daddy Makeover?

Similarly to mommy makeover, daddy makeover is not one specific surgery but a combination of surgical procedures intended to make over dads. Sure, fathers do not go through pregnancy, nor do they nurse infants. But, raising children can also take its toll on a dad’s physique.

With children comes an increase in responsibilities, leaving fathers with less time to work out and often adding to their stress. Stress, aging and other factors that every dad experiences can lead to weight gain throughout a man’s midsection, resulting in the appearance of “love handles” or a lower abdominal pooch. Some men even develop gynecomastia, or “man boobs.”

That is why Dr. Greenwald offers daddy makeover surgery, which often includes liposuction of the abdominal area and perhaps the chest area. For more severe cases of gynecomastia, Dr. Greenwald may recommend male breast reduction surgery to correct man boobs. Some dads may require arm lift or thigh lift surgery, which Dr. Greenwald can also include in daddy makeover treatment. He may also advise injectable treatments, such as Botox, to address the facial worry lines that kids can cause. Dr. Greenwald can even perform abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck” surgery, for dads who have lost skin elasticity throughout the abdominal region. A principal advantage of daddy makeover surgery is that Dr. Greenwald can customize treatment to meet each patient’s needs.

To schedule a personal consultation to find out more about daddy makeover surgery, please contact the practice of Dr. Joshua Greenwald by calling (914) 421-0113 today.
