Pregnancy Is Safe

As you may have already learned, mommy makeover does not affect the ability to safely conceive. Furthermore, the cosmetic treatment does not present any obstacle to your safety during pregnancy or the health of your growing baby. Your chances of having a healthy pregnancy and smooth delivery after mommy makeover are the same as they would be if you did not have cosmetic surgery. Though the ability to breastfeed depends on several factors, many women who get breast implants as part of mommy makeover are able to successfully nurse.

How Will Pregnancy Affect Your Cosmetic Results?

If I am planning mommy makeover, how far in advance do I need to stop breastfeeding?

Most mommy makeovers include breast lift, breast augmentation or a combination of both. Normally Dr. Greenwald asks mommy makeover patients to stop breastfeeding three to six months before surgery. This allows time for the breast tissues to stabilize and Dr. Greenwald to plan out the best surgical result.

I heard a rumor tummy tuck can improve urinary incontinence symptoms. Is that true?

Yes. Although tummy tuck is considered an elective cosmetic procedure, there are functional benefits: namely, alleviating urinary incontinence symptoms as well as back pain.

Will mommy makeover improve my stretch marks?

If the stretch marks are on your lower abdomen, below your belly button, they may be removed during abdominoplasty.

Will anyone be able to see my mommy makeover scars when I wear a bathing suit?

Whenever possible, Dr. Greenwald places the surgical incisions so resulting scars can be concealed beneath a bathing suit. The abdominoplasty incision is usually low enough on the abdomen to be hidden underneath a pair of underwear or a bikini bottom. The breast lift and breast augmentation incisions are made around the nipple-areolar complex and on the bottom of the breasts, where they can be covered by a low cut or bikini top.

When can I resume sexual intercourse after my mommy makeover?

Engaging in strenuous activities like sex too soon after surgery can put your body at risk of complications such as infection, increased bleeding and pain. The general rule of thumb is to wait at least two to four weeks after surgery before resuming sex. After your mommy makeover, Dr. Greenwald will give you a more precise timeline depending on your individual treatment plan and personal healing progress.

Spend Hours Scouring Internet Forums

The Internet is a wonderful medium through which to discuss and exchange ideas; however, there is no way to confirm the accuracy of a lot of the content. It’s all right to look for tips about things that are helpful during recovery, or recommendations for good bras to buy after surgery. But your surgeon should be the one answering more important questions.

Don’t go too far down the rabbit hole the night before surgery. You could get lost reading accounts from Internet strangers that share incorrect information or information that doesn’t apply to you. You could feel influenced to suddenly change decisions that were made carefully and thoughtfully.

Make Last-Minute Changes about Your Implant Size

The night before surgery is not a good time to rethink the surgical plan that has been set in place. By this time, you and Dr. Greenwald have agreed on the type and size of implants to use, the surgical incision pattern and the placement of the implants. Be confident in your decisions and avoid second-guessing yourself if preoperative jitters set in.

It’s normal to worry that you have chosen implants that are too big or too small. However, realize that this is last-minute overthinking at play. Dr. Greenwald has many years of experience in breast augmentation and is wonderful at helping his patients make successful decisions about their implants.

Neglect Your Body

Finally, it is critical to follow all of the advice that Dr. Greenwald and his team have given you about prepping for surgery. It is very common for women having breast augmentation to wonder how the procedure will affect the shape of their nipples (if at all). To satisfy inquiring minds, Dr. Joshua Greenwald has compiled a piece addressing these common questions.

But before diving into the “Q & As,” Dr. Greenwald wants to clarify the proper vernacular. What most women refer to as the nipple is actually the nipple-areola complex (NAC). The nipple is the anatomical feature projecting from the center of the nipple-areola complex that delivers milk to a nursing baby and becomes erect upon stimulation. The areola is the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.

Will breast augmentation enlarge the nipples?

If you look through Dr. Greenwald’s before and after photo gallery, you should notice that most women’s NACs do not get bigger after breast augmentation. They may look fuller, but they generally do not increase in diameter. They certainly do not expand in proportion to the implant.

Can breast surgery change the shape of the nipples?

If you dislike the shape or size of your NAC, Dr. Greenwald can correct these issues. The exact nipple/areola correction technique that he uses depends on the specific problem he is addressing. He can improve the look of oversized, protruding or wide nipples, and overly large or puffy areolas.

Will nipples lose sensitivity after breast augmentation?

There is a possibility that breast augmentation will cause partial or complete loss of sensation. However, the risk is very small.

Some women experience heightened nipple sensitivity after breast augmentation. This usually occurs due to the surgery stretching the nerves, and it is almost always temporary. Certain techniques such as wearing gel nipple covers or taking anti-inflammatory drugs can help reduce the discomfort, which usually subsides about three weeks after surgery.

What can be done about inverted nipples?

Inverted nipples can be corrected during breast augmentation. The exact technique depends on the degree of nipple inversion and how severe it is.
