If you’ve ever taken a hard hit to the face during a game or caught an elbow in practice, you know how fast a sports injury can change the shape and function of your nose. Whether it was football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, or another sport, a broken nose can lead to breathing problems, long-term discomfort, and cosmetic changes you didn’t sign up for. That’s where male rhinoplasty with Dr. Joshua Greenwald comes in. Dr. Greenwald is a renowned board-certified plastic surgeon known for remarkable rhinoplasty results. Our patients frequently praise his unique blend of precision and expert eye for masculine, natural-looking results.

Repairing the Damage After a Broken Nose

Nasal injuries are among the most common facial fractures in sports. These breaks can cause your nose to shift out of alignment, create visible bumps or asymmetry, and make it harder to breathe.

Over time, that trauma can also affect your sleep, your workouts, and your confidence.

Dr. Greenwald specializes in functional and cosmetic nose surgery for men in NYC, Westchester County, and Fairfield County. Whether your injury is recent or occurred years ago, he can straighten the nose, restore normal airflow, and correct issues caused by past trauma.

Tailored Approach for the Male Nose

A man’s nose has unique structural and aesthetic considerations. You may want it to look straighter, more refined, or just like it did before the injury, but without looking “done.” Dr. Greenwald understands how to balance subtle cosmetic improvement with strong, masculine features.

He works with you to understand your personal goals and pays careful attention to unique facial anatomy. During the procedure, Dr. Greenwald can address both internal function (such as a deviated septum) and external appearance, reducing the need for future revision.

Recovery and Results You Can Feel Good About

Most men return to work or light activity within a week after rhinoplasty, although contact sports will need to be avoided for several weeks to protect their results. Swelling gradually fades over the following months, and your breathing often improves much sooner.

Because your nose plays such a central role in both how you breathe and how you look, fixing a sports-related injury can be one of the most rewarding procedures. Dr. Greenwald’s goal is to help you look like yourself again while ensuring you can breathe freely, train hard, and feel confident doing both.

Male Rhinoplasty for Sports Injuries in Harrison, NY

If a past sports injury left you with a crooked nose or difficulty breathing, it might be time to consider male rhinoplasty with Dr. Joshua Greenwald. Call 914-421-0113 to schedule your consultation in Harrison, NY, or NYC.

In 2019, rhinoplasty became the most performed plastic surgery procedure in the United States — a distinction it has maintained since. Here rhinoplasty expert Dr. Joshua Greenwald of Greenwald Plastic Surgery discusses some of the reasons for rhinoplasty’s enduring popularity.

Tailored to Your Needs

Rhinoplasty is a highly customizable procedure — it is tailored to each patient. The long list of changes rhinoplasty can achieve includes adjusting the size of the nose, straightening a crooked nose, adjusting the projection of the nasal tip, removing a bump on the bridge, narrowing or widening the bridge, altering the shape of the nostrils and restoring nasal symmetry. Many patients choose rhinoplasty to make a small but significant change rather than altering the nose entirely.

The Nose is the Center of the Face

People use a variety of fashion and cosmetic tricks to highlight their best assets while minimizing the features they like less. However, concealing the nose is especially difficult given its position at the center of the face. The nose’s prominent position makes some patients feel more inclined to seek cosmetic surgery than they might for another problem area.

Popular Among Men and Women

While breast augmentation and Brazilian butt lift are more popular among women and gynecomastia surgery and chin augmentation cater more to men, rhinoplasty appeals to both women and men. Thanks to its wider patient pool, rhinoplasty ranks higher overall.

Improves the Functionality of the Nose

Most patients seek rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, but some take advantage of the opportunity to improve the nose’s functionality. While operating, a plastic surgeon can also correct a deviated (crooked) septum to improve the flow of air through the nose. This change can make breathing easier, while also cutting down on congestion, sinus infection and nosebleeds.

It Lasts Forever

The results of most plastic surgery procedures are finite. Aging gradually reverses the changes achieved with cosmetic surgery. Fortunately, this is not the case with rhinoplasty. The nose does not lose its shape as it ages, meaning that rhinoplasty results last a lifetime. For many people, that makes it a worthwhile investment.

Speak to Dr. Greenwald

Dr. Greenwald is a celebrated plastic surgeon with offices located in Manhattan, Harrison and Carmel, NY. If you are one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans interested in having rhinoplasty this year, do not settle for less than the best surgeon.

Any surgeon who takes a one-size-fits-all approach to rhinoplasty is not doing his or her job. At Greenwald Plastic Surgery, Dr. Joshua Greenwald understands that a nose job is very much a customized procedure. Among the concerns that Dr. Greenwald has been able to resolve with his expert rhinoplasty skills are:

Straightening a Misaligned Nose

For some people, a crooked nose is the result of a physical injury to the face and for others it is merely a genetic trait. Whatever the cause, Dr. Greenwald can readjust the nasal bones and septum for a straighter appearance.

Repositioning the Nose’s Tip

Pleas to address the tip of the nose during rhinoplasty are among the most frequent requests Dr. Greenwald receives. Whether you feel the tip of your nose is too rounded, pointy, flat, or you want it to turn slightly more upward or downward, all of these changes can be achieved by a skilled surgeon such as Dr. Greenwald.

Enabling Better Breathing

Rhinoplasty is not always about aesthetic concerns. Depending on the severity of the issue, patients with a deviated septum can have more difficulty breathing or even develop sleep apnea. By straightening the septum, Dr. Greenwald can help you to breathe more naturally out of your nostrils.

Changing the Size of the Nose

If the size of your nose does not feel proportional to the rest of your face, Dr. Greenwald can remove cartilage and bone to reduce the size. Way more often than not, patients want a smaller nose, but it is also possible to make the nose larger — men in particular hope it will add to their masculinity — with cartilage grafting.

Removing a Bump on the Nose

Everyone has encountered noses that feature a hump on the bridge. Although there is nothing inherently wrong with this kind of bump, some patients feel it is a more prominent feature than they want to carry around permanently, so Dr. Greenwald can smooth it out via rhinoplasty.

Altering Nostril Size

Patients who specifically do not like the size of their nostrils (be they too large, small, wide or narrow) can attain a different look with the help of rhinoplasty. By removing tissue or repositioning the nasal tip, Dr. Greenwald can alter the general appearance of your nostrils.

Believe it or not, this list is hardly complete when it comes to the kinds of changes rhinoplasty can accomplish. To talk over any and all concerns you may have about your nose with one of New York’s most esteemed surgeons, schedule a consultation at one of Dr. Greenwald’s three offices.

Colloquially referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty not only improves the aesthetic appearance of the face, but also boosts confidence. In many cases, it serves as corrective surgery for a nasal deformity. However, good candidates for rhinoplasty must have realistic expectations. After healing is complete, the person should look better, but should not treat the procedure as a magic wand that improves every aspect of life. In this blog post Dr. Joshua Greenwald discusses other factors pertaining to rhinoplasty candidate suitability.

A Positive Outlook

Along with realistic expectations comes a positive outlook. You have done your research and know what kind of nose you want. Besides changing your look, you realize rhinoplasty has other benefits, such as improving the quality of your breathing and perhaps your ability to sleep. The best candidates are those who do not expect miracles — although sometimes they happen — but just want to improve their lives on various levels.

Good Health

As with any elective surgical procedure, candidates for rhinoplasty should enjoy good health. A person not in the best shape physically should wait until their health improves before seeking out this procedure. While rhinoplasty is usually safe, there are risks with any surgery, and those with health issues are more likely to experience problems.

The Right Age

While teenagers often opt for rhinoplasty, it is critical that facial growth is complete before undergoing the surgery. The nose generally ceases growth by the mid-teen years, so younger teens should wait a while.

No Smoking

Non-smokers are usually good rhinoplasty candidates, but that is not true of those who do indulge in cigarettes or vaping. Nicotine affects blood flow by reducing the size of smaller blood vessels. Those vessels are critical to healing after surgery. Nicotine use may also increase the amount of post-surgical pain, and increase the odds of rare complications. Do yourself an overall health favor by quitting, and then reward yourself with rhinoplasty.

The term rhinoplasty can be used to describe numerous procedures for the nose. Oftentimes we think of rhinoplasty as an elective cosmetic procedure; however, some people undergo rhinoplasty for medical reasons, too.

Take a moment to learn more about the differences between cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty from Dr. Joshua Greenwald.

What Does Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Accomplish?

The goal of cosmetic rhinoplasty is to improve the appearance of the nose by changing one or more of its features. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can modify the shape, angle and/or symmetry of the nose. It can improve the appearance of the nostrils, bridge and/or tip. Often, patients find that improving the appearance of the nose helps to balance out the rest of the facial features, like the chin, mouth and eyes, so they look more harmonious.

Are You a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Rhinoplasty?

You may be a great candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty if you want to correct any of the following:

An oversized nose

An asymmetrical or crooked nose

Overly wide nostrils

Asymmetrical nostrils

A bump or dip on the bridge of the nose

An upturned, downturned or bulbous nasal tip

What Does Functional Rhinoplasty Accomplish?

The goal of functional rhinoplasty is to correct structural or anatomical problems in the nose that interfere with proper breathing. While cosmetic rhinoplasty is something you may desire, functional rhinoplasty is something that you need in order to breathe normally. It may be considered “medically necessary” or even reconstructive, based on the circumstances of the individual case.

Are You a Good Candidate for Functional Rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for functional rhinoplasty if you have:

A deviated septum. The septum is a piece of cartilage separating your nostrils. The septum may be naturally misaligned or “deviated,” or it may become misaligned due to an accident or trauma to the nose.

Enlarged turbinates. Turbinates are shell-like structures that warm and humidify air as it moves through the nasal passages. If these turbinates become swollen or enlarged, it can interfere with the normal flow of air through both sides of the nose.

A nasal fracture or broken nose.

Cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty are not mutually exclusive. Some patients choose to have structural issues corrected while also improving certain aesthetic features of their nose.

If you are interested in having rhinoplasty for cosmetic or functional purposes, Dr. Greenwald would be happy to consult with you. Please contact one of our New York offices today to request an appointment with him.

Rhinoplasty (nasal reshaping) surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures in plastic surgery. New data suggests that the procedure’s benefits may be much more than simply cosmetic; it could help relieve chronic, debilitating headaches. Dr. Joshua Greenwald breaks down the study and what it means in this blog post.

How Does Nasal Surgery Improve Headaches?

A team from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, looked at evidence from previous studies of nasal surgery to treat chronic headaches. The surgeries addressed “contact points,” or areas within the nose and sinuses that often trigger chronic headaches. This treatment is frequently incorporated into functional rhinoplasty to relieve obstructions in the nasal airway and improve breathing function. Commonly, functional rhinoplasty is performed to correct a deviated septum or address excess sinus tissue. It can be combined with cosmetic techniques to improve the appearance of the nose at the same time.

After analyzing the data of over 1,500 patients, the Wisconsin research team discovered that functional rhinoplasty had a tremendously positive effect on headache severity and frequency. Forty eight percent of patients reported that the surgery cured their headaches; 37 percent reported significant improvement in their headaches. (The remaining 15 percent noted no change in their headaches.)

When the research team looked at a subset of the studies, they found that functional rhinoplasty reduced the number of days patients had headaches from approximately 22 days per month to six days.

The procedure was particularly helpful to patients who had a positive response (i.e., relief from the pain of headaches) to a nerve block test prior to surgery.

“These results suggest that the use of nasal surgery to improve headache symptoms is a viable treatment option in appropriately selected chronic headache patients,” according to Ahmed M. Afifi, MD, and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin.

Previously, functional nasal surgery has been shown to improve allergy symptoms and obstructive sleep apnea. Reduction in the frequency and severity of chronic headaches could prove to be another important function of the surgery.

The research team notes that more studies are needed to identify patients most likely to benefit from this surgical approach to treat chronic headaches.

Are you looking forward to showing off a slim, sexy physique on a weekend in the Hamptons or a vacation down to Florida? If diet and exercise have failed to give you the figure you desire, body sculpting with New York plastic surgeon Joshua Greenwald can help. The key is to plan your surgery far enough in advance so you are ready in time for the beach or pool. Here’s why Dr. Greenwald encourages you to act today in order to enjoy a beautiful bikini body come summer.

Leaves Plenty of Time to Heal

It is critical to allow your body sufficient time to heal from surgeries such as liposuction, tummy tuck or body lift. Depending on the specific procedure and its scope, it can take several months to completely recover from your surgery. During the first few months after your operation, swelling and bruising can obscure your results. They need up to six months or so to stabilize.

Less Temptation to Get Outside

Though spring in New York is a beautiful season, it is easier to stay inside and heal during the early months of spring, as compared to the warmer seasons. You won’t be tempted to spend all day outside enjoying the city and wearing down your healing body during the rainy months. Another good time to undergo surgery is winter, since the cold temperatures make it comfortable to stay inside and recover as much as possible.

Easier to Cover Up Bandages and Support Garments

For the weeks following your surgery, the treated area will be bandaged and you may be outfitted in a special support garment (similar to Spanx shapewear). It is easier to conceal the bandages and support garments under long, loose sleeves and pants. No one will be able to tell what is underneath your layers. Covering up proves more difficult during the hot months (precisely the time when you want to show off your improved physique!).

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

If you do not have the time to commit to surgical body sculpting and recovery, Dr. Greenwald offers a few non-surgical alternatives. Treatments like SmartLipo and CoolSculpting are great ways to reduce body fat without extensive recovery downtime and the potential risks of surgery.

To learn more about all of your body sculpting options — surgical and non-surgical — please schedule a consultation with Dr. Greenwald. Call (914) 421-0113 or email our New York City plastic surgery practice today.

These days there is an abundance of information available for women wanting to properly prepare for breast augmentation surgery. Most of it focuses on what you can do to prep your body for the operation. This is only one side of the coin. Knowing what not to do is just as important!

Here, Joshua Greenwald, MD, leading New York City Board Certified plastic surgery specialist, shares what not to do the night before your breast augmentation surgery.

Spend Hours Scouring Internet Forums

The Internet is a wonderful medium through which to discuss and exchange ideas; however, there is no way to confirm the accuracy of a lot of the content. It’s all right to look for tips about things that are helpful during recovery, or recommendations for good bras to buy after surgery. But your surgeon should be the one answering more important questions.

Don’t go too far down the rabbit hole the night before surgery. You could get lost reading accounts from Internet strangers that share incorrect information or information that doesn’t apply to you. You could feel influenced to suddenly change decisions that were made carefully and thoughtfully.

Make Last-Minute Changes about Your Implant Size

The night before surgery is not a good time to rethink the surgical plan that has been set in place. By this time, you and Dr. Greenwald have agreed on the type and size of implants to use, the surgical incision pattern and the placement of the implants. Be confident in your decisions and avoid second-guessing yourself if preoperative jitters set in.

It’s normal to worry that you have chosen implants that are too big or too small. However, realize that this is last-minute overthinking at play. Dr. Greenwald has many years of experience in breast augmentation and is wonderful at helping his patients make successful decisions about their implants.

Neglect Your Body

Finally, it is critical to follow all of the advice that Dr. Greenwald and his team have given you about prepping for surgery. You already have a list of medications, vitamins and nutritional supplements that can interfere with the surgery or impede healing. Avoid taking anything on this list and ask your surgical team if you have questions.

Refrain from drinking alcohol or having a cigarette. Alcohol suppresses your immune system. Smoking greatly increases the risk of surgical complications and inhibits wound healing. Take a bath or do some deep breathing to relax your mind and body.

Eat a light, healthy meal and get to bed early. You have a big day ahead of you!

It is very common for women having breast augmentation to wonder how the procedure will affect the shape of their nipples (if at all). To satisfy inquiring minds, Dr. Joshua Greenwald has compiled a piece addressing these common questions.

But before diving into the “Q & As,” Dr. Greenwald wants to clarify the proper vernacular. What most women refer to as the nipple is actually the nipple-areola complex (NAC). The nipple is the anatomical feature projecting from the center of the nipple-areola complex that delivers milk to a nursing baby and becomes erect upon stimulation. The areola is the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.

Will breast augmentation enlarge the nipples?

If you look through Dr. Greenwald’s before and after photo gallery, you should notice that most women’s NACs do not get bigger after breast augmentation. They may look fuller, but they generally do not increase in diameter. They certainly do not expand in proportion to the implant.

Can breast surgery change the shape of the nipples?

If you dislike the shape or size of your NAC, Dr. Greenwald can correct these issues. The exact nipple/areola correction technique that he uses depends on the specific problem he is addressing. He can improve the look of oversized, protruding or wide nipples, and overly large or puffy areolas.

Will nipples lose sensitivity after breast augmentation?

There is a possibility that breast augmentation will cause partial or complete loss of sensation. However, the risk is very small.

Some women experience heightened nipple sensitivity after breast augmentation. This usually occurs due to the surgery stretching the nerves, and it is almost always temporary. Certain techniques such as wearing gel nipple covers or taking anti-inflammatory drugs can help reduce the discomfort, which usually subsides about three weeks after surgery.

What can be done about inverted nipples?

Inverted nipples can be corrected during breast augmentation. The exact technique depends on the degree of nipple inversion and how severe it is.

Slowing down the aging process is always a popular topic among Dr. Joshua Greenwald’s patients. Many want to know how they can minimize these pesky lines and prevent future lines from forming. Dr. Greenwald offers insight into what are known as “sleep wrinkles,” explaining how they are different from expression wrinkles and the steps to take to minimize them.

Sleep Wrinkles vs. Expression Wrinkles

Most wrinkles, known as expression wrinkles, are caused by the repetition of certain facial expressions over a long period of time. When a muscle contracts to make a facial expression like squinting, frowning or furrowing the brows, the overlying skin develops a wrinkle. For example, consider the Frontalis muscle, which extends vertically up and down the forehead and is responsible for lifting the eyebrows. When the muscle moves to create a surprised or disappointed expression, the forehead skin develops horizontal lines and wrinkles. These can deepen over time. Expression wrinkles are commonly treated with cosmetic injectables (e.g., Botox), laser skin resurfacing or, if they are severe enough, facial plastic surgery.

Sleep wrinkles are not attributed to muscle movement. They develop from repeated forces of stress or compression caused by the position of the head during sleep. For example, sleeping on one’s side or stomach puts tension on certain areas of the skin and leads to lines and wrinkles. Sleep wrinkles typically don’t develop as often in people that sleep primarily on their back, as this position puts the least amount of pressure or tension on the facial skin.

Prevention Is Key

It is very difficult to prevent sleep wrinkles because we cannot always control our sleeping position. You may start out with good intentions sleeping on your back, and then change position 10 times as you sleep, ending up on your stomach or sides. There are pillows that claim to reduce pressure on the facial skin during sleep, but they are not always the most comfortable.

There are things you can do in your daily life to slow down the development of wrinkles.

Smoking and sun exposure are two habits that greatly accelerate the formation of wrinkles. Dr. Greenwald encourages all of his patients that are worried about wrinkles and signs of aging to quit smoking and wear sunscreen every day. Eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep and managing stress are also important to maintaining beautiful skin.
