There’s a common misconception that plastic surgery is performed exclusively for women. If the waiting room in Dr. Joshua Greenwald’s office is any indication of the typical plastic surgeon’s demographic, this information is highly inaccurate.

Virtually every day, Dr. Greenwald meets men that want cosmetic treatment to look as good as they feel. In this post, the plastic surgeon sheds light on the most common aesthetic concerns among his male patients.

Premature Signs of Facial Aging

One of the most common complaints among Dr. Greenwald’s male clientele is visible and premature signs of aging on the face. These men want to minimize prominent wrinkles, fine lines, skin laxity, jowls and displaced fat to shave years off of their appearance.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

Treatment depends on the specific concern and its severity. Some men achieve satisfactory wrinkle reduction with a series of Botox or filler injections. Others enjoy firmer and tighter skin with non-surgical treatments like Fraxel laser skin resurfacing. The gold standard of facial rejuvenation is facelift, which comprehensively addresses signs of aging in the middle and lower face. Modern facelift techniques yield very natural looking results without the telltale signs of surgery that concern many men.

Gynecomastia

Another embarrassing concern of some men is a condition known as gynecomastia, which causes the breasts to swell and enlarge. Having feminine-looking breasts can cause feelings of shame, stress and even depression, as some men withdraw from social situations due to their appearance.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

True gynecomastia requires surgical correction with male breast reduction. Dr. Greenwald excises excess glandular tissue and skin, removes fat deposits and re-drapes the remaining skin more tightly over the breasts. However, if the breasts are enlarged with purely excess fat, liposuction alone may provide sufficient results.

Diet and Exercise-Resistant Body Fat

The breasts aren’t the only area of the body that can accumulate excess fat. Many men struggle with diet and exercise-resistant body fat that accumulates on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, neck or chin. These pockets of fat can disrupt the proportion and balance of the body and attract unwanted attention.

How Dr. Greenwald can help:

Liposuction is the best way to eliminate targeted areas of unwanted fat. Alternatively, individuals that desire a non-surgical solution may be interested in CoolSculpting, which uses controlled cooling to destroy unwanted fat.

If you or the man in your life is bothered by an aesthetic concern of the face, body or chest, Dr. Greenwald would like to help. Please call (914) 421-0113 or email our office to schedule an informational consultation with our trusted plastic surgeon.

Are you looking forward to showing off a slim, sexy physique on a weekend in the Hamptons or a vacation down to Florida? If diet and exercise have failed to give you the figure you desire, body sculpting with New York plastic surgeon Joshua Greenwald can help. The key is to plan your surgery far enough in advance so you are ready in time for the beach or pool. Here’s why Dr. Greenwald encourages you to act today in order to enjoy a beautiful bikini body come summer.

Leaves Plenty of Time to Heal

It is critical to allow your body sufficient time to heal from surgeries such as liposuction, tummy tuck or body lift. Depending on the specific procedure and its scope, it can take several months to completely recover from your surgery. During the first few months after your operation, swelling and bruising can obscure your results. They need up to six months or so to stabilize.

Less Temptation to Get Outside

Though spring in New York is a beautiful season, it is easier to stay inside and heal during the early months of spring, as compared to the warmer seasons. You won’t be tempted to spend all day outside enjoying the city and wearing down your healing body during the rainy months. Another good time to undergo surgery is winter, since the cold temperatures make it comfortable to stay inside and recover as much as possible.

Easier to Cover Up Bandages and Support Garments

For the weeks following your surgery, the treated area will be bandaged and you may be outfitted in a special support garment (similar to Spanx shapewear). It is easier to conceal the bandages and support garments under long, loose sleeves and pants. No one will be able to tell what is underneath your layers. Covering up proves more difficult during the hot months (precisely the time when you want to show off your improved physique!).

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

If you do not have the time to commit to surgical body sculpting and recovery, Dr. Greenwald offers a few non-surgical alternatives. Treatments like SmartLipo and CoolSculpting are great ways to reduce body fat without extensive recovery downtime and the potential risks of surgery.

To learn more about all of your body sculpting options — surgical and non-surgical — please schedule a consultation with Dr. Greenwald. Call (914) 421-0113 or email our New York City plastic surgery practice today.

Slowing down the aging process is always a popular topic among Dr. Joshua Greenwald’s patients. Many want to know how they can minimize these pesky lines and prevent future lines from forming. Dr. Greenwald offers insight into what are known as “sleep wrinkles,” explaining how they are different from expression wrinkles and the steps to take to minimize them.

Sleep Wrinkles vs. Expression Wrinkles

Most wrinkles, known as expression wrinkles, are caused by the repetition of certain facial expressions over a long period of time. When a muscle contracts to make a facial expression like squinting, frowning or furrowing the brows, the overlying skin develops a wrinkle. For example, consider the Frontalis muscle, which extends vertically up and down the forehead and is responsible for lifting the eyebrows. When the muscle moves to create a surprised or disappointed expression, the forehead skin develops horizontal lines and wrinkles. These can deepen over time. Expression wrinkles are commonly treated with cosmetic injectables (e.g., Botox), laser skin resurfacing or, if they are severe enough, facial plastic surgery.

Sleep wrinkles are not attributed to muscle movement. They develop from repeated forces of stress or compression caused by the position of the head during sleep. For example, sleeping on one’s side or stomach puts tension on certain areas of the skin and leads to lines and wrinkles. Sleep wrinkles typically don’t develop as often in people that sleep primarily on their back, as this position puts the least amount of pressure or tension on the facial skin.

Prevention Is Key

It is very difficult to prevent sleep wrinkles because we cannot always control our sleeping position. You may start out with good intentions sleeping on your back, and then change position 10 times as you sleep, ending up on your stomach or sides. There are pillows that claim to reduce pressure on the facial skin during sleep, but they are not always the most comfortable.

There are things you can do in your daily life to slow down the development of wrinkles.

Smoking and sun exposure are two habits that greatly accelerate the formation of wrinkles. Dr. Greenwald encourages all of his patients that are worried about wrinkles and signs of aging to quit smoking and wear sunscreen every day. Eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep and managing stress are also important to maintaining beautiful skin.

A round and curvy hourglass is considered by many to be the most desirable female body shape. Unfortunately, very few women are born with or develop an hourglass shape all on their own. Patients trust to help them achieve a classic hourglass figure with a generous bust, curvaceous lower body and well-defined waistline. Here, Dr. Greenwald outlines the procedures that give patients the physique they request.

Liposuction for a Defined Waistline

One of the most important characteristics of an hourglass figure is a narrow and defined waistline. For many, liposuction is the best way to whittle and sculpt the waist. Unwanted pockets of fat are gently removed from the circumference of the waist during liposuction to give it a more slender contour. Liposuction is also used to eliminate any protrusions or “pooches” of fat on the abdomen.

Breast Implants for a Voluptuous Chest

The breast-to-waist proportion is important. Having larger breasts can make the waistline appear slimmer. With breast augmentation, Dr. Greenwald uses saline or silicone breast implants, which are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. The implants are positioned in front of or behind the pectoralis (chest) muscle.

Buttock Augmentation for a Fuller Backside

Buttock enhancement is often essential to achieving an hourglass shape. A flat or shapeless behind doesn’t offer any projection or curves to complement the waist and breasts.

There are two buttock enhancement options: to lift the tissues and remove extra skin to elevate the backside, or to use the fat removed from the waist during liposuction to add shape and fullness to the buttocks. The latter technique is known as Brazilian Butt Lift and is a very convenient way to transfer fat that is unwanted in one area to another area that needs volume.

Learn More about Your Plastic Surgery Options

Every patient is unique and requires a different surgical plan to accomplish their specific goals. If you are interested in attaining a beautiful hourglass figure with the procedures mentioned in this post, Dr. Greenwald would be happy to discuss your options in more detail during a consultation.

Please call (914) 421-0113 or email our office today to schedule an appointment.

The benefits of plastic surgery are not reserved for only women. In fact, the rise of men visiting plastic surgery offices is a trend seen across the country as well as in Dr. Greenwald’s office. “Woman have always felt pressure to stay young and youthful looking, however, recently, I have seen a huge increase in male patients, who want to look younger, fit better in their clothes and to stay competitive in the workplace ” says Dr. Greenwald. The most common cosmetic surgery for the male population is liposuction, typically in the abdomen, hips (or love handles) as well as in the chin/neck area. Other highly requested surgical procedures include blepharoplasty (or eyelid lift), facelifts/necklifts and gynecomastia (male breast reduction).

Even more popular for men in the plastic surgery realm is actually not surgery at all. With the increase of affordable and efficacious non-surgical options, it’s never been easier to look great without going under the knife. Dr. Greenwald has recognized the growing demand for these procedures by his male patients and has invested in exciting technology to support the needs of men seeking treatment in his practice. From Botox and injectable fillers to address fine lines and rejuvenate the face to hair restoration procedures such as Neograft to reverse hair loss, men have more options than ever before. Dr. Greenwald states, “Like women, men also want to fight the signs of aging which typically starts with non-surgical options such as skin care, Botox and injectables before progressing to more aggressive surgical intervention.” This holds true for body contouring procedures as well. In Dr. Greenwald’s practice, he offers CoolSculpting, a non-surgical, non-invasive alternative to liposuction. “CoolSculpting has really revolutionized the non-surgical body contouring market for men and women but specifically for the busy male, who is concerned about recovery time”, Dr. Greenwald adds “CoolSculpting is a safe and effective treatment to address problem areas such as the abdomen and love handles. Patients can have their in-office treatment on their lunch break and return to work the same day.”

The statistics are in! According to the procedural statistical data for 2014 released this month from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), two standout stats include increases in non-surgical fat reduction and butt augmentation surgeries. The ASAPS data shows that there was a 43 percent rise in non-surgical fat reduction procedures and a whopping 86 percent increase in buttock augmentation surgeries, as compared to 2013. Why are these procedures so popular? Dr. Greenwald explains the procedures involved in these growing trends, and what you need to know if you’re considering any of these procedures.

Freeze Fat Away with CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting, a non-invasive body contouring technique that freezes fat cells, is an increasingly popular, non-surgical alternative to liposuction. According to ASAPS President Dr. Michael Edwards, “Due to the technological advancement and efficacy of nonsurgical fat-reduction devices, it’s not surprising that more people are opting to freeze or melt away stubborn body fat in the comfort of their surgeon’s office as opposed to undergoing surgery.”

The CoolSculpting procedure targets and freezes fat cells, turning them into a liquid which then gradually gets flushed from the body naturally. This procedure is often used on stubborn pockets of fat that are difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise; places such as:

love handles

muffin tops

stomach fat

back rolls

Dr. Joseph Greenwald offers the CoolSculpting procedure at his plastic surgery offices in New York City. The CoolSculpting procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and typically lasts between one and three hours. During the procedure, a handheld vacuum is used to draw the skin in the targeted area between two cooling panels, freezing the fat cells in that area. The procedure is painless, with patients experiencing only a mild cooling sensation and some numbness. Patients typically begin to see results three weeks after treatment, with more pronounced results continuing to appear over the next two to four months.

Butt Lift and Implants for a Shapelier Backside

Voluptuous posteriors are in, a fact that is highlighted by the public idolization of bottom-laden celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj. Dr. Greenwald offers a few options for patients who wish to have a firmer, rounder or lifted backside — or all three!

A fat transfer butt augmentation (also called a Brazilian Butt Lift) is a procedure where excess fat is extracted from another part of the body through liposuction, and then injected into the buttocks for a curvier posterior.

Gluteal (or buttock) implants are made of soft, solid silicone. These are typically used for patients with buttocks that appear flat, loose or sagging due to aging or weight loss. They are also used for buttocks that lack volume and appear too small for the patient’s frame, or buttocks that appear asymmetrical. The implants can be inserted either intramuscularly (inside the gluteus maximus muscle) or subfascially (above the gluteus maximus muscle). Dr. Greenwald offers different gluteal implant shapes that can also be further altered to fit the patient’s frame and needs.

Having healthy skin takes a certain amount of effort on your part. However, the keys to achieving or maintaining healthy skin may be simpler than you think. Here are a few easy things you can do to get healthier skin.

#1: Never Go to Bed Without First Washing Your Face

You should always wash your face before bed. Period. Over the course of each day, dirt, makeup and pollutants accumulate on your skin. If you don’t wash your face before bed, all this debris can clog your pores, leading to acne.

#2: Apply Sunscreen Every Day

Many people mistakenly believe that they do not need to apply sunscreen when the sky is cloudy. However, the sun emits damaging ultraviolet rays every day, regardless of whether it is overcast. To achieve or maintain healthy skin, it is imperative that you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 each morning before you leave the house.

#3: Manage Your Stress Levels

Not only can you get wrinkles from constantly frowning or furrowing your brow when you suffer from chronic stress, but feeling stressed can actually activate the body’s production of cortisol. Cortisol, the stress hormone, causes inflammation, which in turn damages collagen. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that is necessary for healthy skin. Without ample amounts of collagen, your skin can become rigid and / or start to sag.

That is why managing stress levels will help you maintain healthy skin. You can manage stress by taking a walk, meditation, practicing deep breathing techniques, practicing yoga, taking a warm bath, laughing with a friend or asking for a hug, among many other options.

#4: Follow a Nutritious Diet

Yes, we’ve all heard the adage, “You are what you eat.” Well, this is true in certain ways, especially in regard to skin health. For instance, eating nutritious foods can help fight inflammation, support cellular function, provide antioxidant-related benefits and more. On the other hand, consuming too many sugary foods activates a physiological process known as “glycation,” during which proteins — including healthy skin-essential collagen — become rigid. This can lead to dull, hard skin.

#5: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

If you have tried the tips above for several weeks but are not noticing an improvement in your skin health, don’t hesitate to reach out to a skin health expert, such as NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald, for help. He can evaluate your skin health and suggest an appropriate skincare routine or nonsurgical cosmetic procedure to help get your skin back on track.

At the Manhattan cosmetic surgery practice of Joshua A. Greenwald, we recognize that undergoing the cosmetic surgery procedure of your choice involved a significant investment of your time, capital and emotions. However, now that you have had the procedure and are finished with the initial recovery period, the hard part is over! Now, it’s time to enjoy your new look. To protect your aesthetic results from plastic surgery and ensure that you are enjoying your improved appearance for many years to come, be sure to follow these tips.

Follow All Dr. Greenwald’s Instructions – You were meticulous about following all Dr. Greenwald’s preoperative instructions. Don’t stop, now that you have moved into the postoperative phase! The instructions you received from the NYC plastic surgeon are designed to encourage proper healing over the long term and to minimize the chance of experiencing postsurgical complications that could compromise your results.

Keep Scars out of the Sun – To minimize the appearance of your scars, keep them completely out of the sun for at least one year — this is how long it takes for scars to fade so they closely match the color of the surrounding skin. Even 20 minutes of sun exposure can cause a scar to become red and raised from the surface of the skin. Once this happens, it is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to reverse. Cover scars with clothing or sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 (preferably higher), and make sure to reapply the sunscreen frequently.

Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices – If you consistently eat unhealthy, highly caloric foods and gain a substantial amount of weight (about 10 percent or more of your total body weight) following your liposuction or body contouring procedure, you could compromise the aesthetic results of your cosmetic surgery. In addition, practicing unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking or sunbathing without the proper UV protection, can inhibit proper healing and counteract the aesthetic results of procedures such as facelift surgery.

Get Routine Massages – This tip is one that most of us will enjoy practicing. Not only do massages help relax tight muscles, they also stimulate the lymphatic drainage of toxins from your body as well as promote good blood circulation, both of which are beneficial for maintaining your plastic surgery results.

To arrange a personal consultation with Dr. Greenwald to learn more about the plastic surgery procedure of your choice, contact his practice by calling (914) 421-0113.

Undergoing plastic surgery with New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua Greenwald is an exciting event on its own. You will look younger, more rejuvenated or simply like a better version of your previous self no matter which procedure you are pursuing.

So, how can you make the undertaking even more enjoyable? Consider recuperating from plastic surgery at a posh or relaxing hotel. Not only will you enjoy the way you look after your procedure, but you will feel more relaxed and rested after recovering at a hotel. More good news: New York City is one of the most beautiful, interesting cities in the world with plenty of accommodations to make you feel at home while you recover after plastic surgery. Here are three of our favorite places to recuperate after plastic surgery with Dr. Greenwald.

1. The Pierre is one of New York City’s most lavish hotels, boasting a posh lobby with a Fifth Avenue entrance. If you have undergone plastic surgery with Dr. Greenwald, however, you may opt to take the side entrance and less visible service elevators up to your plush room instead of coming in through the main entrance. Although the hotel does not provide details about the amenities they offer for recovering plastic surgery patients on their website, they do offer many. Simply call and speak to the knowing staff to organize your stay. Certain hotel packages come with accommodations for a private in-suite nurse and access to both a stylist and nutritionist, so you can recover in comfort — and style.

2. The Surrey on Manhattan’s Upper East Side is a New York classic. The staff at the Surrey is experienced in helping plastic surgery patients recover after their procedure. Hotel staff members supply extra pillows and cold compresses as needed. Special spa treatments and room service are also available so guests can relax without needing to leave their room while recuperating.

3. The Carlyle is also located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and can serve as your private escape. It is an Art Deco classic with 188 rooms, so you can enjoy your surroundings while nestling in one of the many comfortable rooms. With excellent customer service and direct dial to the pharmacy, it is a perfect place to recover following cosmetic surgery.

If your favorite NYC hotel did not make our list, don’t fret. Simply call your preferred hotel to find out how they can accommodate recovering plastic surgery patients. Many hotels offer special discounts and special amenities to make your recovery period comfortable and often luxurious. In fact, you may never want to leave!

To schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Greenwald to learn more about your plastic surgery options, please contact his practice by calling (914) 421-0113.
