How Do You Massage Breasts After Breast Augmentation?

Massaging the breasts after implant placement is very important to preventing the formation of excess scar tissue. New York City breast surgeon Dr. Joshua Greenwald encourages all of his breast augmentation patients to massage their breasts on a daily basis, especially in the early days and weeks following surgery.

The purpose of breast massage is to keep the breasts flexible, bouncy and natural looking by preventing stiffening caused by excess scar tissue. When a foreign object is placed in the body, the body’s natural response is to stimulate the growth of scar tissue in order to protect and heal itself. This means it will attempt to encapsulate any foreign bodies by sending fiber cells to the incision sites, thereby generating scar tissue. Breast massage can help keep the scar tissue to a minimum for a more natural look and feel.

There are several breast massaging techniques that can be used. Dr. Greenwald will demonstrate these techniques for you as part of your aftercare instructions. In most cases, patients are asked to apply a soft moisturizer on the breasts and begin massaging the breasts in a circular motion starting with the nipples and then slowly working their way to the base of the breasts. If the breasts are not even immediately after surgery, it is helpful to massage more deeply above the higher breast to encourage the implant to drop lower.

Another common technique is breast implant displacement massage. With this technique, the breasts are massaged around the implants with a gentle push up, down, inward and outward, to keep the implant pocket from contracting around the implant.

Breast massage after implant placement is recommended on a daily basis, in some cases two to three times a day, for the first four weeks. Patients should continue to massage their breasts at least once daily for a few months.

Dr. Greenwald will help guide you through your entire recovery from breast augmentation surgery, and will show you different massaging techniques you should use at different stages of the healing process.
