Can the Effects of Dermal Fillers Be Reversed?
Dermal fillers are a helpful way for those that are starting to see signs of aging, but don’t yet need surgical intervention. They can be used to fill in deep wrinkles and creases, and restore youthful looking volume to the temples, cheeks and lips. When administered by a plastic surgeon or a qualified nurse or physician’s assistant, dermal fillers deliver beautiful, natural looking results.
Most of the patients that seek dermal filler treatment are delighted with their results. In spite of their high success rate, there is still a small chance that a patient won’t like the filler results or they may react poorly to the product.
In those scenarios, is it possible for Dr. Greenwald to reverse the effects of filler treatment?
Several Ways to Reverse Fillers
Good news: a skilled plastic surgeon can often correct or improve the results of filler treatment. The exact technique used depends on the problem and its severity.
For example, if fillers produce some lumps or asymmetrical results, sometimes it is helpful to gently massage the treated area. This can enhance the smoothness and symmetry of the skin and get rid of any bumps.
Juvederm, Restylane and other fillers that are formulated with hyaluronic acid can be reversed with an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. Injecting this enzyme into the treated area dissolves the particles of hyaluronic acid. This is helpful in cases where the patient is dissatisfied with their results, or in the rare cases where the treated area develops prolonged swelling or infection.
Hyaluronidase is ineffective on non-hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Sculptra and Radiesse. Steroid injections may “undo” some of the effects of those fillers, but it isn’t fail-safe. For the most part, these fillers need to be absorbed by the body in order to see their effects reversed. In certain cases, strategically injecting an additional filler product into the treated area can improve results.
Keep in mind that regardless of whether the effects of dermal fillers can be reversed, the results are only temporary. Depending on the specific problems, the results should wear off naturally within a few months to a year.
